Moore Livestock would like to thank everyone involved with the VanDyke Angus Ranch for generously allowing us to list a few of our bred heifers at the end of their 2024 Bull Sale. We have been buying bulls from them for the last forty years, and in all of that time, the VanDyke ranch has been the best example of honesty and generosity that the cattle business has to offer. We are incredibly appreciative of everything they do, we love their cattle, and we are excited to continue buying bulls from them for as long as they are willing to sell them. We hope that you are too.

Our Philosophy

Like many ranches across Montana, Moore Livestock has been breeding and developing our own replacements for a long time. In doing so, we have attempted to broadly mimic the maternal characteristics you are likely to find in the VanDyke angus herd. The highest priority of our breeding program is fertility. After that, we aim for a moderate framed female, with good fleshing ability and moderate milking potential. She should reach a mature weight of 1,200 to 1,300 lbs.

To us, an ideal mother cow should require only moderate amounts of feed and very little supplementation to get through the winter in good condition. Going into the summer, she should be able to conceive within a fairly short breeding window. We then want her to give birth to an 80lb calf in the field without difficulty or assistance, get that calf up and going quickly, and keep track of her calf through the whole summer.

When it comes to weaning weights, we generally try not to push the envelope too far. We generally shoot for a weaning weight of approximately 525lbs (40% of mature body weight). This is because we have found that a slightly smaller weaning weight means that we are able to dramatically improve the number of cows that breed back each summer.

After weaning, we like cattle that can perform well in either a grazing environment or in a confined feeding operation.

Thank you for your interest in our cattle, and we hope they work well for you. Please get ahold of us anytime if you have any questions!

Heifer Information

  • These heifers are all born and developed at Moore Livestock, near Two Dot, MT.

  • These heifers are bred exclusively to bulls from VanDyke Angus. The specific bulls are listed at the bottom of this page.

  • These Heifers should all calve between May 15th and May 30th.

These Heifers are the latest bred heifers from a 50 day breeding window.

    • The Bulls were turned out on July 8th, 2023 and gathered back up on August 26th for a total of a 50 day breeding window.

  • These heifers were preg tested on October 23rd of 2023, and will be tested again just prior to the sale.

  • These heifers have an average frame score of 5.1.

  • These Heifers Averaged 880lbs at preg check, at approximately 18 months of age.

  • We normally expect to assist about %5 of our first calf heifers with the birthing process.

  • Approximately 50% of these heifers have been sired by VanDyke Angus Bulls, with the other %50 being sired by bulls from either the Fort Logan Ranch of White Sulphur Springs, MT or the Green Mountain Angus Ranch of Barber, MT.

  • This group of heifers has been raised strictly on grass and grass hay. We have a very low copper environment here, so they have been given quite a bit of RangePro Breedback Mineral from Mountain West Ag out of Garneill, Montana. They also received just a little bit of Flaxlic to keep them from losing ground over the winter. Total Flaxlic consumption was 20lbs per head for their entire lifetime. Other than Flaxlic, they have never received any other supplementation such as grain or cake.
